What I have to deal with. At Starbucks. Everyday.

Update: To clear some things up... I don't work for the company anymore.

Also, thanks a ton to everyone who gets what this is all about =)

I have to say I am overreacting too much to your video by having an argument over the Internet about it XD

Worked as a barista during college, and the 'didn't you see me writing the novel on a hot beverage cup?' comment had me rolling on the floor. That and the people who wanted things measured, like a 1/4 inch of foam or 17/43 inch of ice cubes gave me hell. The only upside was that the people in line behind these asshats usually were sympathetic and nicer than they normally would be. Thanks for laughter of truth!

The reason it matters is because we aren't all sociopaths who don't feel emotion. Most people pick up other people's negative energy, whether they are just standing there thinking shitty thoughts to themselves or if they happen to be yelling at you. It affects our mood. Nobody likes to be bitched at, regardless of whether they're being paid for it.

Thank christ. Too many people here who don't get the joke. But thanks!

I did suck it up, for about three years.

I understand the point he's making. But I'll say this again. The video is satire. I made it where I embellished what it was like working for the company. Anyone commenting on this video who works (or did work) for Starbucks had a good laugh and could relate to this. That was the goal.

Two schools of though, for me at least. The situation overall is frustrating. Because I have to be fast with the transaction. People get cranky, orders might get messed up, I could get yelled at by my boss, etc. Normally I would end my shift, leave, and forget about it until I came back in the next day. It's also frustrating because I don't want to be there. Secondly, I've said this before on here: it's satire.

LOL take that elitists who want to make themselves feel more important than the rest of humanity by acting like jerks to the people who serve them!

Trying to discredit me with insults only weakens your argument. There is absolutely no reason to care in any way shape or form if some random stranger who you don't know yells at you and ultimately accomplishes nothing of harm to you. I could sit behind a counter getting yelled at by some random person for 5 hours and it wouldn't be any different if I sat behind a counter and took orders from various customers for 5 hours. There's still no real reason to care what someone you don't know says.

Would you harass a cop the same way? No of course not, because a cop could do something about it, even though they still get paid at the end of their shift no matter what. A barista at Starbucks cant do anything about it on the other hand, so you WOULD harass them. Proving that people harass these starbucks workers because they know they're defenseless and cant do/say anything back. Very cowardly and sick "DJBrandon".

If you had a job you would understand...

Also Im a customer too, I also shop, I also go to the movies, and go places where I must spend money...but I dont harass anyone when I do. I wouldnt feel that it would be right to do so, I would feel like a psychotic moron if I did...then again, Im normal, I dont suffer from any kind of mental illness that would prevent me from treating people with the same respect they show me.

Oh I've been in customer service for 4 years man, I dunno about how long you've been but what Im trying to say is there's no reason for it...what separates someone like that from a customer who happens to be nice? Obviously if someone comes in to starbucks and harasses someone who works there "just because they get paid" and views those workers as defenseless animals who are there to be abused then there's something wrong with that "customer"...
  17. DJBranden, at 05/27/2013 07:18, says:
Who cares? It's not like it matters either way. If some poor sap feels like they need to harass somebody then let them. It's not like they're not still getting paid. Once their shift is over then they're done and they got paid. Quite frankly you'd be an idiot not to expect this kind of stuff when you applied for the job.

Did you and your psychologist run out of ideas for coping skills??? "Hmm Im going to deal with my life's problems by going into a coffee shop and harassing the people who work there and treating them like shit, they deserve it because they're making money! OMG now I feel so much more like a human being!!!"

It would be easier on everyone involved if the customers weren't so goddamn stupid and self absorbed, so glad we only have a few people like this at my location

Speaking from a business perspective, a good employee is one who compliantly does his work, and puts up an approachable guise for customers. Rude, irritable employees are burdens unless they are extremely skilled and efficient. There are some unfortunate situations people can be in in which I feel absolute empathy and compassion for, but this isn't one of them. If I put myself in his shoes I would have just sucked it up.
  21. klwint02, at 05/16/2013 22:54, says:
The barista is not the only person involved. The time of the customers in line is being wasted (and the barista is the one who has to deal with those annoyed people) and the product of the company is being thrown away and remade (and those coffee beans aren't grown in the first world). It's called empathy. Don't objectify or disrespect strangers simply because they are paid to sling cheap-ass coffee at you, they might be fired if you complain about them, and you don't expect to see them again.
  22. themiraclefate, at 05/14/2013 03:24, says:
I completely agree. We should put up with it minor annoyances like this and just do the job right as we are paid to do so. To me, this was a portrayal of a petty first world problem.
  23. DJBranden, at 05/02/2013 16:48, says:
I never understood the idea of frustration during a transaction. No matter how stupid the customer is you're still being paid by the hour so it shouldn't matter whether your asking for more information or doing another thousand simple transactions.

Haha. I worked as a barista at starbucks in downtown seattle at the #1 volume store for about a year. Had to deal with this on a daily basis
