you know what i think. i think you just cant compare players from different generations even just the volleys because everything is different. for examples,today courts are much slower than the courts in the generations player you mentioned, and the balls are softer and heavier which make the game slower. And maybe if federer were to be in faster generation of the game he might be S&V player and has be better volleys than sampras or other guy but who know.

The game has changed, and now S&V is not a style that will win you Slams. Too many players are just too fast. Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, are prime examples of why S&V is dead. But that does not means Federer is a less accomplished player at the net than Sampras. Far from it, I actually think he volleys better.

Also, I admit that Sampras has a best serve, so big that he got easy volleys most of the times. I am talking about the volley part only, not the whole S&V game. Federer did not matured into a S&V player like Sampras did. But his volleys are as good as Pete, if not better. I've seen Federer hit outrageous volleys (Wimbledon final 2012 as example).
