CHAN:
Not a single registered blue taxi can be seen in Sanya, a tourist city in the island province of Hainan in China. Taxi drivers are protesting against high rental fees and competition from unlicensed cabs.
More than 300 gathered on Wednesday demanding the release of 21 people detained by police. They were suspected of smashing up 15 cabs when their first day of strike turned violent on Monday.
This is the third taxi strike in China this month, just days after similar strikes by 9000 drivers in the southwestern city Chongqing and by over 100 drivers in the northwestern province of Gansu.
According to the state-controlled Xinhua News Agency, Sanya's mayor Wang Yong met with drivers to apologize and vowed to crack down on illegal cabs. But for now, tourists still have to rely on the illegal taxis.
Despite the Communist Party's tight control, protest are increasing across China with growing economic unrest, and as dissatisfaction grows over poor living standards, abuse of power, land grabs and labor disputes.
