The more hopeless you are in the environment the better. I wouldn't consider calling the one monster at a time technique a "gimmick" if you want us to take your argument seriously, blasting waves of enemies is as much of a gimmick itself, dead space is not frightening just because everything is clear, and killable. Monsters aren't scary, your imagination is the scariest thing ever, that is why amnesia is more frightening.

I was playing the RE Revalations demo and all i could think of was "yup this is the third abloogy woogy woo" kinda game

Also the "no combat" thing doesn't really make the game any scarier, I can promise you that fending off waves of monsters with dwindling ammo in a game like Dead Space makes me a lot more tense, than facing one monster at a time while simply running and hiding until you can get past them, the gimmick is frightening at first, but it gets rather old. However as with Alien, and Aliens when it is done well it can be awesome either way, not that close minded shmucks would get that ;)

No I see where he is coming from with dead space. It becomes much harder to be terrified of something when you have a gun and surviving is for the most part as simple as "Press X to not die" (Considering all but the boss monsters will start this QTE in an attempt to instakill you that gives you a generous amount of time) honestly I only ever felt scared at the beginning of dead space two during the tutorial when you are running away from the monsters IN A STRAIGHT JACKET Effective Tension there.

You get the feeling Yahtzee never actually played Dead Space? When it comes to horror I say there are several ways to do it right, the best examples are Alien, and Aliens both are amazing movies, but the second one is like newer horror games in that it focused more on action, and it was perfectly fine. They both work, and only the close minded snobs say that Alien is the only way to do horror.

There is a fourth kind of horror. The kind where there is actually nothing there. Anmesia also falls into this category.
