This is a "Law Lessong" - a law lesson in a song - that was written by a student in a Legal Environment of Business Class at the University of Connecticut. I use it in class to help students consider the issues of civil duty in negligence law. The law generally does not require one to take measures to save another who is in danger -- with notable exceptions.

If you see a dying person,
And you can help her live,
Do you sit and watch her worsen,
Or offer up what you can give?
Be a hero another day?
Be a hero another day?
Be a hero another day?
Be a hero another day?
Be a hero another day?
Be a hero another day?
It's legal if you say,
You'll be a hero another day.
On a sad day one year,
A girl falls on the rail tracks,
You see a train coming near,
Now, you can do a righteous act,
So do you choose to . . .
Help her or walk away?
Help her or walk away?
Help her or walk away?
Help her or walk away?
Help her or walk away?
Help her or walk away?
It's legal if you say,
You'd help her another day.
You have no duty to assist,
You have a right to the cold shoulder,
But do you really want to resist,
Lending a helping hand,
To save the life of one who'd really be missed?
When you see a man in trouble,
Would you go help him out?
Or would you leave him bleeding;
Let him scream and shout,
'Til he's gone?
It happens every day
It happens every day
It happens every day
It happens every day
It happens every day
It happens every day
It's legal if you say,
"Maybe, another day."
