Television - Marquee Moon
1977 Marquee Moon

Synopsis:

Somewhere the line was inscribed in asphalt between punk and jam bands, and Television crossed it valiantly. At the forefront of this is their track Marquee Moon from the album of the same name. With the twin attack of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd on guitar comes a rhythmical assault of punk that all gets turned on its head at the epic climax of this song. In concert, the band has sometimes extended the song to as long as fifteen minutes.

Lyrics:

I remember
how the darkness doubled
I recall
lightning struck itself.
I was listening
listening to the rain
I was hearing
hearing something else.

Life in the hive puckered up my night,
the kiss of death, the embrace of life.
There I stand neath the Marquee Moon
Just waiting,
Hesitating...
I ain't waiting

I spoke to a man
down at the tracks.
I asked him
how he don't go mad.
He said "Look here junior, don't you be so happy.
And for Heaven's sake, don't you be so sad."

Well a Cadillac
it pulled out of the graveyard.
Pulled up to me
all they said get in.
Then the Cadillac
it puttered back into the graveyard.
And me,
I got out again.

Thanks for giving it a chance and a listen though. Most who don't appreciate another genre of music are quick to criticize or leave outright. Protopunk is definitely a niche genre, but to those who listen to it, Television were one of the best bands from the genre even with their one-hit wonder status, their band breaking up and reuniting in the 90's and subsequent sub-par albums (opinion). Sorry for the history lesson, but thanks for giving the music a chance as not too many people do nowadays.

I've been listen to them since the late 70's. true Verlaine has a quirky voice, but the makes it for me. The Clash didn't sing all that great.

What a narrow mind, If you think Television is not punk, you are clearly lost in this topic

Actually, this IS punk music. Punk began as more of an ethic or an attitude towards music and as a musical community. It wasn't originally a "sound." Early on this band featured Richard Hell of the Heartbreakers & Voidoids. They're also the first rock band to start playing CBGB and were responsible for people like the Ramones and Blondie being allowed to play there.

relaaaxxx, i wasn't trying to be patronizing. I've no doubt your a fan of both singers. I'm a Bob Dylan fanatic and yet I still thought All Along the Watchtower was a Jimi Hendrix cover. I was merely loling at the fact that I was imagining Morrison saying something like that.
