COMET LOVEJOY SURVIVES: Incredibly, sungrazing Comet Lovejoy appears to have survived its close encounter with the sun. Lovejoy flew only 140,000 km over the stellar surface during the early hours of Dec. 16th. http://spaceweather.com

Oh come on! Our magnetosphere gets stripped all the way down to our atmosphere thousands of times in the last 50 years, but not a single satellite, space station or astronaut moves? Space sucks at heat, but melt Comet melt? And yes, you just correctly disproved the Big Bang's total nonsense. Oh yes, the constant "flurry" of micro meteorites are true too...3 "alleged" examples EVER. It's just that Hubble, the ISS & its solar panels or 20,000+ satellites haven't gotten the memo yet.

Two words about solar wind affecting things near Earth: Magnetic Field. For the very most part the solar winds do not affect us. Sometimes the Sun gets wily and blasts large amounts of materials out way. That's when the field is pushed to its limits and we run into problems. Yes, space is a very poor heat conductor. There is nearly nothing to conduct heat away from things. Also it's not 100% ice either. And yes they said it lost mass so it must have been larger in the first place. Sheesh.

You're babbling contradiction to justify "science's" lies & deceits - Our "scientists" got old-hat math wrong for the size? Our stuff is too small to be effected by "solar wind", but this MIR & ISS sized "comet" AND it's every particle wasn't? Heat conducts poorly, but yep, it should melt to its hearts content long before even Mars? "They" state solar wind is just as weak as gravity, but we'll sail right out of our solar system to far-far beyond? Foul, Red-Card, Gutter-ball & Strike-out!

The reason that solar winds don't really affect our satellites is that the magnetic field of Earth deflects it a substantial amount. That's why we get the Northern/Southern lights. Also solar sails are not a new idea. These spacecraft would have a VERY large surface on which to harness the pressure of the solar wind. Solar sails might one day whisk us away to other far off solar systems. The reason we know this stuff is that we do question how things work. We're still learning. :)

It came out at 200m so the estimation on size was probably wrong to begin with. It was probably a couple hundred meters larger. Also remember that in space there's very nearly no air so the heat conducts very poorly. While the surface is getting baked and sublimation is occurring it's not like it's speeding through an atmosphere. If it were it'd like explode like that object over Russia a couple of months ago.

It survives because it's NOT made of ice. And it wasn't 200 meters, it was the size of Pluto.

The comet didn't go through the sun, it just went into the sun's atmosphere

I agree, there is something more into this comet, comet?

Comet Nuclei are DARK MATTER, micro black holes and very dangerous to life on Earth. It is all on my blog at darkmattersalot"dot"com

Oh nothing. It's just ENTIRELY IMPOSSIBLE that a 200-meter or less than 2/10-tenths of a mile -wink-"Comet"-wink- should make in through the middle of the Sun's atmosphere & come out UNCHANGED. It's not like ANY & ALL components of ANYTHING in the known universe liquify & vaporize at the Sun's temps. ...Oh wait? It's not like a Comet's tail would disappear as it instantly vaporizes OR that it would melt to nothing OR have its tail pushed ahead of it by the solar wind on Sun exit. ...Oh wait?

"Comets have tails due to the Sun's forces of Solar Radiation & Solar Wind". (though they've never moved a satellite, space station or astronaut on our Moon or during any EVA an inch!) But, oh yeah, friction-o-rama baby...we swear. "Comet tails always point away from the Sun" (except on solar exit & the tails don't disappear as they should from instant vaporization) go figure. ASS-TRONOMY IS SUCH A FRAUD! That we listen to these book taught never question NOTHING autistics is incredible!

That comet is probably a miniature star now after bathed by close radiation+ how stupid is this 200meter in diameter size comet is being clearly vaporized and survives in what size? That comet to me seems a lot larger then a planet X ! Aahhhhhhhhhhhh I don't believe in imaginary planets....

I think that the comet deserves a name change after this event... Comet Lovejoy should be renamed Comet Swearengen...

I think most ppl don't grasp the scale of the sun it is a star. Our earth or even jupiter would be vaporized of they passed within a million miles of it, its ten thousand times the size of earth also the comet was going really fast through super heated coronal particles for hundreds of thousands of miles it wasn't made of ice.

They said it was 600ft (200m) wide? LOL How big was it AFTER it was sent back on it's highly elliptical return path? LOL Looks as though it actually GAINED size after it got ejected back out.

, I hear ya. Amazingly we have yet to prove any gas-dust-ice theory when it comes to the comets. Every comet we have ever explored have turned out to be, well, like comet Temple for example. Hard surface of.... no 'dust-gas-ice'.
