Reading is an important part of being a writer. Though, it's not so much about quantity as it is diversity. It's important to see what ideas are out there, the extent of what you can do with a story, learning what works and what doesn't work for you in terms of how you communicate. As you said, it's more important to have something to write about, but reading widely and often will provide a vaster amount of tools with which to craft your story.

That is how I was too. I've been writing my own stories since I was 9-years-old. I read books, I enjoy them, and I've wanted to get my books published. You can get your book self-published though.

As a guy who has almost finished final editing on his first novel I can say this is pretty much exactly what I was like when I started. ...and years later...not much has changed.

True. The read-hundreds-of-books method is only true for pop fiction writers (like shitty sci-fi, fantasy, chicklit or thrillers). The only way you can write a brilliant piece of literature is to actually have something to write about. If you truly write out of your own experience, and your own ideology, then you are able to create literary fiction. Only write fiction if you have a genuine reason to write it.

I'm going to sell my first novel for $500K. The movie rights will be snapped up by Sony. The Rock and Helen Mirren will play the main characters and Peter Jackson will direct.

I'm remembering the scene from Sideways where Miles mentions his novel at dinner and the Italian guy basically trashes the whole idea of writing fiction.

The funniest part of all of this is that this guy actually has more ambition than most wannabe authors. His ideas may be far-fetched, but I would bet that he would make it in SOMETHING with that kind of drive!

This is a Pure exaggerated video meant for laughs. You don't have to read hundreds novels to write a novel. You can read 0 novels in your whole life and write an excellent novel.

There's a lot of truth in this like they said below, but I wrote and published a novel all myself in a month, and published it with kindle direct publishing for free. And have sold 46, and I wrote it in one month when I was 15.
