The day that I was commuting to work only to come across a lorry on fire within the tunnel - everyone just drove by and initially I stopped 50 yards behind the lorry to prevent other cars from proceeding into the tunnel - however I then spotted the driver still near the cabin of the lorry - I accelerated towards him, flung open the passenger door and beckoned the driver into my car so as to get him out. Fortunately, he jumped in and off we went at speed out of the tunnel just as a tire exploded.

Shortly after, the entire lorry starting erupting, including what we believe to be the fuel tank blowing up.

Hell of a day...!

Variable speed limits, very cool. Europe is a couple of steps ahead of us on that one.

Ah ok - well on this motorway the lanes would all always have the same speed, but each lane has it's own indicator to allow the emergency services to close a specific lane, not it's own dedicated speed limit. This part of the motorway is variable speed limit, those signs are capable of digitally altering the shown speed limit depending on the volume of traffic.

We have speed limit signs but not like that. Plus a speed limit is assigned to every lane not just a particular lane.

Its a speed limit sign - surely you have those in the US?

Holy shot dude! Love your attitude towards the situation! Good that's all okay! Passed through there today and the tunnel is cleaned up but it's not the same! :(

Well I'm glad he's ok - I haven't heard from him since the incident, please ask him to get in touch, I'm the chap that brought him out of the tunnel.

i know that the turbo blew out because my freind was the driver who was badly burnt on his arms and legs as he tried to disconect his unit

How do you know that the Turbo blew out? I don't personally believe that this was the cause, particuarly by the remains of a tyre strewn all over the carriage way leading up the tunnel, and black skidmarks from the entrance up to the lorry itself.
  12. reduseless1, at 07/31/2011 15:35, says:
now now peeps the fire was caused by a turbo blow out on his truck not a tyre blow out and he only stopped because a stupid car drive pulled across the front of him and stopped him and he was unable to get out of the tunnel because the engine cut out so blame the idiot car driver

Probably because there is a good chance that when a tyre blows it could take out a brake line. Air pressure keeps the brakes OFF, no air pressure and the brakes lock solid. To suggest that the truck was on fire and the driver entered the tunnel on purpose is typical of ignorance about truck drivers like me and our responsibilities to lesser vehicles with incompetent drivers.

I think i whent through this tunnel in either 2009 or 2008

why did the driver enter the tunnel and why did he stop inside when you go through in no time its only about 400 yards long
