Is the British National Party right to claim that they are not a racist, violent or Nazi party, and to claim that they believe in democracy and free speech? When the BNP set-up their HQ in a permanently boarded-up shop in Welling, South East London, the arrival of the BNP was followed by a shocking increase in local knife crimes, including the murders of schoolboys Rohit Duggal, Rolan Adams and Stephen Lawrence.
Exercising their democratic right to free speech, local Trade Unionists organised an anti-BNP meeting in Welling Public Library. Rather than turning up to debate BNP beliefs in a rational manner, BNP officials launched an attack on this meeting that was so violent that one BNP activist Matthew Collins (who was a full and simultaneous member of the the BNP, the NF and the openly Nazi group Combat 18) started passing information about the BNP to an Anti-Fascist group in disgust.
Matthew Collins explained how the BNP used "HAMMERS, pieces of wood, sticks and motorcycle helmets" to discuss BNP policy on "free speech" with a library caretaker and with old and defenceless (white and Asian) women, 17 of whom were hospitalised by this vicious BNP attack...

Convicted football hooligan Luke Smith was arrested after punching the publican in the face when he was thrown out for being drunk. Luke Smith was encouraged to join the BNP by his uncle Steven Smith, a BNP organiser. Luke Smith was elected to Burnley Council in 2003. In 2006 Luke Smith was jailed for 17 months after being convicted of violent disorder, and was banned from football grounds for 6 years.
