Are you ready for a Nerdy Valentines Day? http://bit.ly/WekHqK
Fix the Budget: http://dft.ba/-58L Pizza shirts: http://dftba.com/pizza

In which John discusses the New York Times's web-based application allowing each of us to examine the extent and complexity of the United States federal budget deficit and the difficulty of balancing the budget. Do we increase taxes or cut spending? Or, more plausibly but less politically viable, both raise taxes and lower spending? Also there is some talk of pizza shirts.

Does this app consider in 2010 we were in a DEEP recession with horrible debt that since then has dropped 400$ billion in deficit?

Eliminate farm subsidies, increase social security to 68. Shrink the military (both armed and naval) put some weapon development on hold, pull most troops out of Iraq. Reform malpractice law, increase medicare to 68.Raise retirement age in line with life expectancy, Clinton-era tax, Obama investment tax, VAT (it's 20% here, I think you'll manage 5%) eliminate loopholes (unrealistic) and have a carbon tax. $178bn surplas in 2015, $321bn in 2030. tinyurl /nftzeys. Also forgot to mention, grant rewards and incentives to companies who pay all workers above minimum wage, also to all companies that make over a certain amount of money that can prove all their goods are produced here. I may be less missing something, but with the knowledge I have it makes sense.

It may be widely unpopular, but I think killing the NAFTA would help. I feel it would force better products to our market because no manufacturer would feel it to be cost effective to ship lower end goods to our markets. It would also ensure that fewer risks were taken with cheaper goods. Third it may encourage more jobs here in the U.S. due to American companies moving production overseas. Personally, I would incite a penalty on American based companies that outsourced labor. this way we MAKE$

solved it. it was really not that hard. just got rid of unnecessary military spending closed tax loopholes and let the bush era tax cuts expire. but to be fair I solved the deficit using a European bias (because im british and we dont mind funding the government with taxes). so things like reducing military spending in actuallity wouldnt be as tolerated in the states i feel. also rather annoyed that they linked spending on the nuclear arsenal AND space

I raised taxes to Clinton-era levels and added surcharges to the rich, kept most of the public sector and military jobs but reduced our influence aboard as much as possible, closed tax loopholes and included a consumption tax to make the most of the massive amount of tourists America attracts each year and you have a balanced budget. budget balancing is easy, you just got have the balls to do it and not be a pussy (or a prick) about it!

I solved it without touching a cent of military spending and without inflicting any severe taxes on the rich. The rich ended up having taxes almost identical to the rest of the population. I didn't even have to use anything from the new tax/tax reform section!
  17. Aviel Menter, at 04/14/2013 04:34, says:
So I took a look at it. I managed to balance the budget using the tool but I didn't cut the military too drastically just because I was a bit worried about what consequences that might carry. I raised the retirement age to 70, and I did that because if you ask John Green, social security and medicare costs are going to grow _dramatically_ and that's going to require some fix at some point.

    Yes, you must run.
  19. Aviel Menter, at 04/04/2013 08:30, says:
I think balancing the budget isn't as easy as you made it sound because you haven't totally analyzed the impact of some of your cuts. However, though finding a way to effectively balance the budget might be hard, some very smart economists have done that work for us. The problem isn't finding workable solutions. It's getting people to agree on them.

This style of footage is the reason I relax and watch Youtube. I waste a large amount of time this way. However a large amount of pet owners are slowly and gradually KILLING their dogs - without knowing it! The shit companies use in dog food brings about malignant tumors and tends to make dogs pass away young.. To save your dog's life lookup the Double Life Dog Diet (Google it.)

  24. EasySnake, at 03/10/2013 16:44, says:
The only way to cut the military is to accept that we will have to talk with other nations and groups instead of demonizing them and resorting to violence. I just haven't seen that happen. The democrats are the party of peace in America. In almost any other country the foreign policy of the democrats would be consider aggressive and provocative. Eg. drone strikes, spec ops, gunship diplomacy, telling other governments what they can do, missile shields, etc.
