Many birds use elaborate displays to impress and attract a mate. In this clip we observe some of them in action. From the BBC.

Yup, it's a decoration. It's there to please the eyes more than it's there for anything else.

Ask yourself why that is. It's to please the females.

It's amazing that quite a few comments for this video are directed negatively towards women. Absolutely typical. I suppose it's only a matter of time now before there's a religious argument. Most female birds don't have showy markings because they have to take care of the babies and remain camouflaged so that they (and the babies) are not eaten by predators.

Doesn't everyone? Will it kill female celebrities to not wear make-up while making public appearances? Apperantly.

Let me remind you that biologically the male of the species is the better looking one, and that includes humans as well.

I love birds, but the tragopan (display starts at 0:48 ) cracks me up whenever I see it. Poor male birds, they try so hard. XD

I can't help but wonder if they attribute their own significance to this behaviour. If they could say 'why',would they say they merely wanted to make themselves attractive to woo a mate, or something further removed from the evolutionary significance, maybe they would say it feels good to sing and dance, or something superstitious?

so... in birds, the males are better looking than the females. whereas human females apply a dozen layers of makeup to attract the males. birds are awesome.
