I have the Kindle Fire aswell.... To get to the menu he shows you just need to use your finger on top of the screen ans scroll down, so the menu will show on your screen.

I think it should be off ! Also seem to battle a bit, switch the kindle on but do not unlock it, plug in the charger the red light should come on and the screen closes after awhile, hope this has been a help ? am also a new user and learning, let me know any tricks you learn ?
