3D may still by the buzz word when it comes to TVs at the moment, but if LG's 31 inch prototype model is anything to go by, the future of flatscreen televisions really lies in OLED technology.

At 31 inches in size, it's the worlds biggest OLED screen, and, at 2.9mm thick, the slimmest too. Colour reproduction is stunning on the 31 inch display with no bleeding across tones, and as OLED pixels generate their own light, incredible black levels are also possible.

We were already sold on the panel's 2D skills, but add in its impressive 3D abilities too and LG seem to have pretty much every base covered.

LG's George Mead talks us through the screen in the video. Start saving the pennies, as he reveals this one will be unleashed to the public in "the near future".

Why do people always want better stuff? Is it impossible for you to be satisfied with what you have? Of course not.

Actually, they already showcased some super flexible OLED screens at CES 2011. It's literally a "sheet of screen". But of course they were just prototypes, we probably won't see 'em on the market 'till 2017 or something. lol

one day they'll have a screen you can un roll just like a fruit roll up

i cant see big difference between LCD and plasma, plasma just cost less, but uses more energy. Of course OLED is amazing, but OLED is only dream for me to have it, maybe in 10 years ill get it..
  9. Dan Frederiksen, at 12/31/2010 15:07, says:
I didn't say plasma was great but I wouldn't say LCD is better than plasma. LCD is fundamentally flawed in that it only works with polarized light. and it's a semimechanical system which is why it's so slow and messy to respond. it's also why it has viewing angle problems. further it's obstructing so a black screen still uses as much energy as a white one. OLED can be 0.1mm thick and have response time in the microsecond range. not tens of milliseconds. LCD was a massive mistake.

why u say that LCD is crappy, its better than plasma

OLED technology has been until recently only practical for small screens. The technology you see here was very unreliable in bigger screens, and OLED screens from a couple of years ago did not have a long enough life to be used for television where it runs for hours. Also before you talk about how great it looks here, remember that you are watching it on an LCD or CRT now which you are at the same time saying is crappy :-) You can only pass judgement if you see it live

Oh, that could be. I just remember them making a big deal about the tiny OLED in one of their cameras at the time and claiming it was the first OLED "something."

Hey I recognize that username... Surprised you didn't mention something about vehicle weight and how Tesla will fail in all that. :P At least we agree that OLEDs are awesome (still on my CRT monitor due to actual blacks and not grey - imagine that)
  14. Dan Frederiksen, at 11/16/2010 05:42, says:
nah it's much older than that. according to wikipedia the principle was first described in the 60s and kodak made the first devices in 1987
  15. Bristecom, at 11/16/2010 04:17, says:
Yeah, I am shocked how long it took them to make use of the technology. From the moment Kodak invented OLED in 2000, I knew it would be the future.

AFAIK this display is 1920x1080 and whilst it can do 3D it halves the resolution in the process. Specs are still sketchy though.
  17. trooperJac, at 10/18/2010 18:11, says:
I'm currently running an LG LCD and whilst it's a decent monitor for general gaming and working in Windows for movies it's performance is quite poor. This display cannot produce black. A letterboxed movie is worse because the black bars top & bottom are grey. I cannot wait for OLED displays. Movies with actual black :D

@DanFrederiksen Oh man. If you're right, that makes me so angry - we could've been on this YEARS AGO had the money men not squeezed every last drop of cash out of input laggy LCD or the green unfriendly, screen burning infamy of Plasma. Fuck everything else. The manufacturers need to put all they've got into getting this tech down to mass market prices ASAP. Even with the low video quality here, you can clearly see the colours popping off the screen the way they do on our smartphones today.
  19. Dan Frederiksen, at 09/27/2010 17:58, says:
bullshit. a reduced lifespan isn't why they are pricing this 31 inch at 9000$ it's coordinated technological stagnation. greed and stupidity
  20. Colnago2005, at 09/27/2010 17:44, says:
The problem they've had with OLED is the lifespan. When they first discovered OLED a diode would last a few seconds. Even now I think they last about 2 - 3 years which alot of people might not want to pay for. At least now it's marketable and I agree that OLED will eventually be the new leader in display and light source.

why would it be difficult to make larger than 12 inches?

  23. meestaree, at 09/13/2010 02:33, says:
lol even our electronics aren't sexy unless they are thin - don't know if im ready to be papercut by my electronics, they better make nice sturdy cases - what if i want to turn on a fan and the monitor flips up or blows across the room - i knew it, its a way for paperweights to make it back to desks - holding down all our equipment - nice move glass blowers to stay viable how convenient you come in "clear" color, clearly planned
  24. Deanzsyclone, at 09/07/2010 07:00, says:
Damn, that would make a nice computer monitor.
  25. Dan Frederiksen, at 09/06/2010 15:51, says:
OLED will blow everything away. plasma, crappy LCD, projectors too. it's superior in every way. easier to make. much lower power consumption, instant response, ultra thin. the assholes are just holding back because they are shitheads and because they know that once OLED is unleashed it will be so cheap that it will dwindle their profits. they are that level of bastards. and oled is old. as old as LCD. but the morons chose to develop crappy LCD.. eventually we will have large screen OLED rolls
