I really would love to see a Pete Sampras's match against Nadal. That way we could see if Sampras would really do those shots.

"A step slow", I don't think it was Haas who said that. I believe it was Rusedski in the previous round.

DunkinDonutful, if you really believe Sampras was the GOAT, then you should check out this little ebook which has a chapter dedicated to this argument. It is called "The Protected Era of Men's Tennis" and you can find it on Amazon. Lots of interesting stats and analysis to show that today's game protects the top few players, somewhat weakening the case for Roger as the GOAT.

Pete was GOAT. Federer was a poor mans GOAT.

People will always argue who was the best ever. But the one thing that can never be argued was how could Pete hit with so damn much power and play so damn stylish cuz for me it was how cool he looked when playing ! Bar none ,no one played sweeter

just saw a look back of this win for sampras on us open coverage. they said haas was overheard in the locker room after being spanked by sampras - saying he didn't think sampras would win another match in that tournament - said he could tell sampras was a step behind?? as you know - sampras won the tournament!

One big difference is that most players use polyester strings now which are much stiffer than gut. The same player that used to string gut at 60 lbs would now string poly at 45 lbs. Sampras played with gut.

LOL, Sampras' serve and forehand have so much pace and acceleration, and his volley game is so sweet! I would love to see Nadal, Djokovic and Murray trying to make their ugly passing shots against Pete! :D

Sampras uses Wilson Pro Staff, which is very very stiff. He basically has too much power, and needed heavy and stiff racket just to control his power.

the Pro Staff 85 is strictly a racket for control. and Sampras strung his racket at 70lbs-74lbs which means that he got zero power at all from his strings. He was just a gorilla on court and supplied all the power himself. all players today string their rackets from 40-60lbs.

Sampras must use the most powerful racquet in the world, he hits the ball so hard

I remember TV commentary watching that match in 2002 that "we have only two options. Sampras will win in 4 sets or Haas in 5" :) BTW what a irony. Sampras double-faulted on match point for Haas in Toronto a couple of weeks earlier. This time Haas made a double-fault on match point for Pete :)
