Hank, Buck, & Pork (Amendment One)

Apologies for coming back so soon to the topic of my last video, but I have something I want to say to Hank Green and Michael Buckley—and everyone else upset about North Carolina's Amendment One. As for the pork, it figures into a thought experiment I propose to illustrate that in the United States, our laws don't derive from religion.
This video is in response to
Hank's "Your Arguments Are Invalid: Gay Marriage"
youtu.be/uQw0eLzfGNI
and Buck's "NORTH CAROLINA BANS GAY MARRIAGE..... A sad day for everyone"
http://youtu.be/PYC04ei-3zU
They're both excellent: but why did they post AFTER the vote and not before?
If you are interested in the topic, you won't find a wiser point of view than John Green's
Religion and Gay Marriage
http://youtu.be/uQw0eLzfGNI

Michael Buckley went right to the cruel heart of Amendment One.
It hurts kids.
Period.
As a moral issue, I think you can close the case right there.
Michael, I love that you can talk to the kids hurt by this amendment from your own experience and authority and heart and help them stay strong.
Hank, you took a different approach.
But you netted out pretty much in the same place that Buck did.
of course, you said it in Nerdese—cause that's your language,
you said "you're gonna make a bunch of people's lives
less awesome."

"It doesn't get better, we have to make it better." Now there sir, is a quote that will stay with me. A quote to live by. Excellent as always.

Even more, I think it would be wrong to NOT speak up at least from time to time ... That said, of course I can't force anybody to become vegan and to try that would be arrogant. but veganism is NOT a religion and if we are angry quite often, just imagine that you lived in a world where it was perfectly fine that all people kicked and punched or even killed their dogs and cats for fun and you were among the 1% of the population that was against it. My freedom ends where that of another begins...

Good video, buuuut comparing veganism to religious militarism really made me cringe ... trying to convince other people to take on your religious beliefs = just for your own sake trying to convince people not to eat meat/dairy/eggs/... = for the sake of the planet and animals I honestly don't care what other people belive or don't believe in, but as soon as it harms other beings/our world so drastically, it's hard to just sit there and shut up. :/ (tbc)

I proudly voted AGAINST Amendment One, and it was the first time I was able to vote. Thank you for posting this, I hope one day my generation will overturn this ridiculous denial of rights!

The less recognised third option is that no-one has a right to be married, in the sense that why should any particular relationship be sanctified by government? Same-Sex marriage is part of a slippery slope... that began with the legislation of heterosexual marriage. If you want to get married, great, just leave the government out of it!

Yes, but... It's not new legislation, it would be a constitutional amendment. Those are very hard to pass and Romney couldn't just "bring it in." An amendment must be approved by a two-thirds majority of both House and Senate, signed by the president, and then ratified by two-thirds of the state legislatures. (There are other pats, but they are even harder.) So, even if Romney wins, it's not likely to happen. But it shows where he stands and who he is pandering to.

Does that mean they would undo all gay marriages in those states if Romney brought in the new legislation?

Thank you so much for providing a clear, well-argued, and perfectly concise video on this topic. I agree with absolutely everything you said.

I agree. Not at all likely to happen. But I mention it to note where Romney stands on the matter and whom he's willing to pander to. Romney, in 1994 said he'd run to the left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights. Today, he's to the right of George Bush and Dick Cheney.

as far as Romney wanting to add an ammendment to the constitution, i don't think it'll pass an artcle 5 convention. u need a super majority in both houses ans well as the State legistatures. that's too much of a hot button, and there would be too many politicians that would lose their jobs

i couldn't agree more. if you feel that, because of your religion, you don't want to do something, or endorse it, then fine.. but should one of my best friends not be allowed to get married to the woman that she loves when she's older just because of what your religion believes? obviously not. thankyou to you, michael and hank for talking about this. i hope we can inspire this generation to think differently

What's important to know about Mitt Romney is this: he will be available with a pen to sign any bills passed by a GOP right wing congress. His foreign policy advisers are holdovers from the neocon crew that got the Bush administration into Iraq. He will appoint right wing judges to the federal courts—including the Supreme Court. He has endorsed the radical budget proposals of Congressman Paul Ryan. He will cut programs aimed at the poor and middle class to give more tax breaks to the rich.

Mitt Romney has me rather worried, although to be honest I don't know how much of what he's said lately- and this applies mostly to things said during the primaries- was simply said to appeal to his Republican base (with how far to the right it's gone in the recent past). I've looked into things he said before the whole race got started, and many of them seemed rather reasonable; what has me more inclined towards Obama at the moment is that how much of that remains is anyone's guess.

Thank you for speaking out so clearly. It seems obvious Mitt Romney is, so far, pandering to get votes, or at worst, planning to overturn the US Constitution's first amendment.

I approve of less ppl eating bacon ... more for me. In truth I stand in the middle ground of ppl that just dont care because it doesnt applie to me. Also doesnt help that I know no gay people, or couples.

If we really believe the Christian Bible as our guide to what a marriage is, should we, as Solomon who was so wise, endorse polygamy and concubine-ery?

There is precedence to what I posted. A couple was married and the husband "accidentally" forgot to get the marriage license (because he didn't want her to have any interest in his business holdings). He told the minister he would get it after but never did. Several years later he left his "wife" after his business had failed. Low and behold because it was a legally witnessed ceremony she was still stuck with half of his debt even without the certificate.
